MEET & GREET

IAN FROST, ODST SCHOOL IMPROVEMENT ADVISER & COACH

Currently a school improvement adviser and an ILM Level 7 Coach, we are delighted that from September, Ian Frost will become Deputy CEO at ODST.

Ian works closely with school leaders to support their schools and also their own professional development.  He coaches 75 school leaders, both within ODST schools and beyond, and also delivers the NPQSL programme.

Prior to joining ODST, Ian was a headteacher for 10 years, and has completed an ILM Level 7 Certificate in Executive Coaching and Mentoring. Outside his day job, Ian can be found writing, or walking in the hills with his dog.

What is coaching?

Ian believes coaching offers school leaders a much-needed opportunity for some reflective space in a high-pressure world, particularly following an intense two years dealing with the operational challenges of Covid.

Coaching is a non-therapeutic intervention (coaching is not counselling), intended for those who wish to find the time to think more deeply, to reflect on their work or personal situation, or look more closely at their career.

Ian says the focus is "strength-based and affirmative: building first on what's strong, not what's wrong. I aim to provide a calming space and the thinking time to look more strategically and long term. I coach colleagues in clarifying their thinking, then strengthening habits which generate change. Listening well is at the heart of my practice - it is important to me that school leaders are properly heard, and that this helps them to ask themselves questions in an authentic way.

Many of us really struggle with two key things: a sense of imposter syndrome and the curse of perfectionism. I really hope that through the experience of coaching people grow in confidence. I believe that creating and protecting this reflective space can really help lift our energy levels at a tough time, so that we feel valued, can rebuild and emerge even stronger."

DEVELOPING EXCELLENCE ACROSS ODST SCHOOLS

Early Years Network: Leading EYFS with confidence

Thirty early years leaders from ODST schools took part in this course on 10th March. The course was designed to develop a shared understanding of what is quality practice within EYFS, and effective strategies to improve teaching across a team. It was led by consultants Early Excellence, alongside Helen Prud'homme, ODST EYFS leader and Assistant head at St Mary's Banbury. The group explored how to effectively support children in developing self-regulation skills, and the concept of Sustained Shared Thinking, using evidence and knowledge of how young children learn and the implications for best practice and provision in school. They will now complete a gap task before part two of the course in June.

Subject Leadership Networks across the curriculum

ODST Subject Leader Networks have been developing rapidly, with colleagues from across the trust now appointed as cross-trust subject leaders. We have been extremely impressed with the talent, passion and dedication of subject leaders in ODST schools.

Having school-based subject leaders design and lead our networks, we can ensure dynamic networks sharing good practice in each area. Appointed subject leaders will lead on cross-trust network meetings, and we plan to supplement these with expertise from external partners, as already seen in the EYFS network.

Moderation and Assessment in Writing

We are looking forward to having in-person moderation and assessment sessions resume for the first time since the pandemic began. Julie Sargent, English consultant, will run sessions for Year 2 teachers (4th May) and Year 6 teachers (19th May), focusing on moderating writing. These are designed to support teachers in making secure judgements against the teacher assessment framework.

SUPPORTING WELL-BEING

Well-being is not only an individual journey, sometimes we can’t make this journey on our own and need the help of others. It’s also about looking within, to see the things we may need to change.

The ODST HR team have produced a helpful template that anyone can use to think about their own well-being, considering the physical, emotional and financial elements.
