Pupils at The Hendreds C of E Primary School wowed by un-flipper-gettable surprise visit

Children at The Hendreds C of E Primary School, part of the Oxford Diocesan Schools Trust (ODST), were flabbergasted this week when some extra special surprise visitors waddled their way into school – four endangered Humbolt penguins!

Pupils had been kept on ice with the details, only told their guests were ‘unusual’ and had ‘never visited the school before’ - but were linked to Key Stage 1’s current topic of the Polar Region.

The extra special visit from the adorable quartet was arranged through Amazing Animals  - who also run Heythrop Zoological Gardens and often supply animals for the film and television industry.

Lisa Rees, Headteacher, said: “The children were so shocked! We thought about teasing them with clues throughout the week but decided to keep it a total surprise. It was a truly amazing visit and a complete first for us.”

The Humboldt penguins originate from South America, and staff from Amazing Animals spoke to the children about the endangered species as children took turns to ask questions.

Lisa added: “This was a truly once-in-a-lifetime experience for the children and staff of The Hendreds C of E Primary.

“We work so hard to make all of our learning memorable for our children, and days like this really highlight the lengths our brilliant staff go to for our children. Seeing penguins waddle across the school hall will live long in all of our memories.”

Sharon Mullins, CEO of ODST said: “We are so pleased the children enjoyed their feathered surprise.

“The best learning happens when the children have the biggest smiles – and it is lovely to see the children light up when things like this happen. The Hendreds is such a special and warm place and it is easy to see why children flourish when they are part of the school’s community.”
