Join us as a Local Governing Body Member

At ODST we warmly welcome interest from individuals interested in being part of the governance of our schools. The members of our Local Governing Bodies (LGBs) are a key part of ODST and individual school communities. They play a vital role in shaping the education of children and young people, by helping to set the ethos, vision, and strategy for our schools.

Why become a Local Governing Body Member with ODST?

Do you want to make a difference in your community and contribute to the vision we have for our schools? Can you bring skills and knowledge gained in business, work, volunteering or family life to support one of our schools to give children a great start in life?

Being a member of a Local Governing Body means playing a part in making important decisions that have a huge impact on the lives of young people, and every LGB Member has a role to play in helping them get the best possible education. It's a rewarding opportunity, and one that can also help you build on your skills in areas such as people management, finance, communications, data and more. You will gain valuable experience in the formal processes of governance, the chance to take part in a range of school activities and visits and receive training to support your work.

'Being on the governing body is a great opportunity for anyone who is interested in children's education to make an impact on their lives, and at the same time develop your own skills and learn new ones.'

Who can join a Local Governing Body?
Nearly everyone over 18 can get involved in school governance, and you do not need to have experience in the education sector or as a parent. We are looking for people who are interested in education, able to work well with others, are willing to listen and make informed judgements, and committed to continual improvement of our schools. Particular business skills that are useful include finance, managing people, or experience in companies. A DBS check will be required. Aside from that, we simply ask that you are willing to volunteer some time and commitment to your Local Governing Body and school. We will offer training and support for your new role.

Training, support and development
Once appointed as a LGB Member you will have access to a comprehensive programme of training and support.
